The project
Victoria Urban Terminal
Port Louis, Mauritius
The Victoria Urban Terminal stands as a transformative 50,000 sqm Transit Oriented Development (TOD) in the heart of Mauritius’ capital, handling an impressive daily traffic of 80,000 commuters. This pivotal project exemplifies a successful Public-Private-Partnership, integrating seamlessly with the newly inaugurated metro line, and offering extensive amenities including bus bays, taxi stands, electric bike parking, and 400 parking spots. The terminal enriches the community with 8,000 sqm of retail space, 1,000 hawker stalls, and 2,900 sqm of office spaces, all while respecting the historic 200-year-old city infrastructure.
Material of Construction Details
Architectural and design visions were brought to life using innovative construction techniques such as off-site prefabrication, permeable paving, and the reuse of existing materials like stone, metal, and timber to minimise the environmental impact. The project prioritises sustainability, blending it seamlessly with aesthetic and functional upgrades. It utilises low-emission concrete, recycled materials, energy-efficient glazing, and low VOC paints to further reduce the environmental impact. Additionally, a white reflective waterproofing membrane is employed to reduce heat gain and improve the building’s energy efficiency.
Special Features: Innovative Solutions and Social Inclusion
The terminal’s design showcases several innovative solutions, particularly the elevation of historical structures to protect them from flooding, which demonstrates a proactive stance on climate resilience. Traffic flow within the terminal was meticulously redesigned by a team that included a German Traffic Engineer, significantly enhancing safety and efficiency for commuters. Furthermore, the design includes a dedicated market space for 1,000 street hawkers, transforming informal vendors into recognised retailers and fostering social inclusion. This not only organises their activities but also supports their integration into the formal economy, enhancing community interactions and economic opportunities for local residents.
