CASCAVELLE SHOPPING MALL: AN ARCHITECTURAL IDENTITY INSPIRED BY NATURE

At Cascavelle Shopping Mall, the architectural concept began with a familiar natural symbol: the Cascavelle tree.

Known for its strong trunk, branching form and generous canopy, the tree inspired a distinctive design language across the mall extension. Rather than copying its shape, the architecture interprets its qualities through structure, movement and shelter.

The result is a contemporary retail destination rooted in place and designed around people.

Architecture inspired by the Cascavelle tree

The Cascavelle tree offered a clear architectural idea:

The trunk became structure.
The branches became movement.
The canopy became shelter.

These natural forms were translated into tree-like columns, curved steel elements and sweeping roof canopies.

Repeated throughout the project, they create a recognisable identity while connecting the different areas of the mall.

A strong sense of arrival

At the main entrance, the branching structure forms a memorable gateway.

It creates a strong first impression while guiding visitors into the development. The canopy frames the arrival experience and establishes an immediate connection between the architecture, the landscape and the Cascavelle name.

This is more than a visual feature. It gives the project a clear sense of place.

Designed for the Mauritian climate

The canopies also respond to the tropical climate of Mauritius.

They provide shade from the sun, shelter from rain and help maintain open, naturally ventilated circulation spaces.

Light filters through the structure throughout the day, creating changing patterns of shadow and giving the walkways a more comfortable and welcoming atmosphere.

The architectural identity therefore supports both beauty and performance.

Architecture designed around movement and gathering

Like the canopy of a tree, the project creates spaces where people can move, pause and come together.

Shaded walkways, verandahs, terraces and landscaped areas connect the different parts of the mall. These spaces encourage visitors to stay longer, meet others and experience Cascavelle Shopping Mall as more than a shopping destination.

The design contributes to placemaking by creating an environment that feels social, open and connected.

Turning an idea into reality

The curved steel structures required careful technical development.

Each element was engineered, formed and assembled to achieve the organic appearance of the design while meeting structural requirements.

The process brought together architectural design, engineering, fabrication and on-site installation.

What appears simple and fluid is the result of precision, coordination and craftsmanship.

Connecting the existing mall and the extension

The new design also responds to the character of the existing Cascavelle Shopping Mall.

Features such as the open concourse, generous overhangs and tree-like forms of the existing food court helped inform the extension.

These ideas were reinterpreted and developed into a stronger architectural language, creating continuity between the old and new areas of the mall.

Rooted in place

The Cascavelle Shopping Mall extension shows how a local natural reference can become a meaningful architectural identity.

The tree-inspired design provides shelter, organises movement, strengthens the arrival experience and gives the project a recognisable character.

Rooted in the Mauritian landscape and shaped through contemporary architecture, Cascavelle brings together nature, engineering and human experience.

An idea inspired by a tree.
An identity shaped by architecture.
A place designed to bring people together.
