The project
So Flo
Floreal, Mauritius
Located in the heart of Floréal, So’Flo is Mauritius’s first boutique shopping mall, offering a unique retail experience that blends contemporary design with natural beauty. The mall gracefully integrates with the existing trees, creating harmony between architecture and the lush landscape.
A standout feature is the entrance lobby within a newly constructed Plantation House. This structure pays homage to the 19th-century house that once occupied the site—a historic residence used by bishops. By rebuilding on the exact footprint of the original house, the design honors Floréal’s cultural heritage while introducing modern functionality.
The project faced unique challenges requiring innovative solutions. Preserving as many existing trees as possible added complexity to the design and construction. The tight timeline demanded a fast-track approach to ensure timely completion without compromising quality. Remarkably, So’Flo opened its doors in November 2017, precisely as scheduled.
In recognition of its architectural excellence, So’Flo was awarded “Best Retail Architecture Mauritius” at the International Property Awards 2018-2019. This prestigious accolade underscores the project’s success in combining sustainable development with innovative design.
So’Flo is more than a shopping destination; it’s an embodiment of how modern architecture can coexist with nature and history. The project demonstrates a commitment to preserving cultural heritage and environmental integrity, setting a new standard for future developments in Mauritius.
