The Commercial Centre of Phoenix was the first shopping mall on the island to house a hypermarket when it opened in 1994. In 2010, the mall was redeveloped and the renovation and extension was designed by Architects Studio Ltd. with Boogertman + Partners. A new McDonalds’ drive through & restaurant was included and built separately to the main mall in the parking area. The centre went on to win three awards at the International Property Awards in 2011.
In 2012, a further extension of the mall was created in Phase 2, designed around a “market place” concept reminiscent of Mauritian culture with traditional small shops and courtyard eating spaces where people could gather & meet. The architecture took its style and inspiration from old colonial houses, which was then adapted to create a language of modern vernacular forms. Phase 2 entailed an increase of 5,000 m² of leasing space and the extension of the parking space to 10,000 m² including a multi-storey parking structure. An addition of 37 new retail outlets, including 16 eateries, 19 shops and 2 ATMS in Phase 2 has now brought the total number of outlets at Phoenix to more than a hundred shops with a mix of local and international brands.
