The project

HEI Schools Mauritius

Forbach, Mauritius

Once a labourers’ camp within the historic Forbach Sugar Estate, the HEI Schools Mauritius project reimagines a place of work and memory into a space of light, learning, and play. The team transformed the longère typology—its stone walls, courtyards and shared kitchens—into a vibrant early-learning environment where history and childhood curiosity meet. The design preserves the essence of the past while opening it to natural light, colour, and movement. At the heart of the project lies the idea of community. The classrooms open onto generous shaded courtyards that become outdoor learning and play spaces. Locally sourced materials—stone, timber, and metal—are paired with soft tones and textures, grounding the architecture in its Mauritian context while creating a warm, sensory atmosphere. Sustainability is woven through every detail: passive cooling, shaded openings, and the adaptive reuse of the existing structure reduce the building’s environmental footprint while maintaining comfort. The result is an inspiring environment where learning unfolds naturally, in harmony with heritage and landscape.
