Reinventing Retail Through Placemaking

Retail today extends far beyond commerce. It is about creating destinations where people gather, connect and spend time. The extension of Cascavelle Shopping Mall reimagines the traditional shopping centre as an open, vibrant lifestyle destination where architecture, landscape and community become inseparable.

Architects Studio was appointed to lead the architectural design of this major expansion, developing a vision that responds to the unique character of Mauritius’ west coast while creating a memorable destination for visitors of all ages.

Rather than adopting the conventional enclosed mall model, the project draws inspiration from the scale and atmosphere of a tropical village. Shaded pedestrian streets, generous verandahs, landscaped plazas and open-air terraces encourage exploration, social interaction and moments of pause. The masterplan creates a seamless relationship between retail, dining, entertainment and public spaces, transforming the extension into a place that remains active throughout the day and into the evening.

A defining feature of the project is its architectural identity, inspired by the iconic Cascavelle tree. Its branching geometry informed the design of the sculptural steel canopies, tree-like columns and expansive roof structures that provide shade, establish visual rhythm and create a distinctive sense of place. This architectural language gives the development a unique identity deeply rooted in its natural context.

The design places equal emphasis on experience and wellbeing. Carefully positioned seating areas, event spaces, children’s play zones and landscaped gathering places enrich the public realm, encouraging visitors to linger beyond the retail experience. Passive environmental strategies—including generous shading, natural ventilation and extensive planting—improve thermal comfort while reducing the environmental footprint of the development.

Internally, the architectural vision continues through a warm and contemporary material palette, complemented by carefully curated interior environments and lighting design developed in collaboration with Pangea Design Group team in South Africa. Together, these elements create welcoming spaces that support both tenant flexibility and an elevated visitor experience.
